Newborn

Newborns are the absolute favourite subject Angie loves to capture and well and truly shows through her passion for capturing all those tiny details of your newborn baby. Angie will comfort them, soothe them to sleep then carefully pose them into position. Angie is often called the baby whisperer by many clients as she seems to get all babies to settle and sleep so well.

These sessions we believe are so important to capture as your baby will only be so small for such a short time and you will blink and miss it, next thing they are 6 months old before you know it. Angie focuses on capturing all those details of your newborn before they begin to change their looks and no longer look like a newborn. Your newborn session will be a special milestone in your baby’s life.  I want to help you tell the story of your new baby.

I like to create a calm and peaceful environment during our time together.  It’s important to let me know if we will be photographing older siblings, as well as mummy and daddy shots. These will take place at the beginning of the session so that we may have the remaining time focusing on the baby alone.  Angie is very much sought after and has won many awards for her photography and passion in this field.

WHEN SHOULD I CALL TO SCHEDULE MY NEWBORN SESSION?

Before your baby is born. It is best to book in as early as possible so you can plan ahead and I can be organised for yoru session also. The best time to capture newborns is in their first 2 weeks of birth while they are still sleepy and curled up. It can make such a huge difference to your newborn portraits. Angie’s schedule usually fills up quite fast so best to get in contact before your baby is born so space is allocated in her diary to fit you in once bub is born. As we know babies never arrive when they are due so we put you in our calendar to hold a spot for you round your due date. Once your baby is born we will allocate your spot accordingly.

If your baby came early or if you forgot to organise a session prior to the birth, dont worry! We always try our best to fit you into our diary and older babies also take nice portraits too.

IS ONE WEEK TOO EARLY FOR MY SESSION?

Absolutely not! We prefer to photograph our newborn sessions between 6-10days old. At this age they are still acting like they are in the womb. They are nice and sleepy and very curly as they were inside you. We can take up to 3-4 hours for your session as we leave plenty of time for feeding, nappy changes and breaks for mum and bub. Come as soon as your ready! We look forward to meeting your new baby!

WHAT SHOULD BABY WEAR?

We have you covered! Newborns are best photographed without clothing at all. Angie loves to stylise your session to suit the colour theme you love or to go with your house colours or nursery theme. We have an extensive range or wraps, bonnets, headbands, props, etc so you dont need to worry. If you have a special blanket or heirloom you would like to incorporate please bring along and we can see what we can do. Heirlooms that are special to you will make your images much more meaningful to you also. All our props coordinte with each other to ensure we can create one of a kind images for you nd your family.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY NEWBORN SESSION?

We always recommend that you bring baby to the session well rested and plan to feed as soon as you arrive. Sleepy babies photograph perfectly and so much better than awake babies do, so Angie will ask to undress your baby before feeding to ensure we dont disturb bub to undress after feeding. We will take several breaks throughout your session to feed bub to ensure a full belly and a happy baby. We would also ask that you not be concerned about feeding to a schedule during the session and that you feed on demand or when they start to fuss to ensure baby’s comfort and a smooth session.

CAN I BE PHOTOGRAPHED WITH MY BABY?

Absolutely! Of course! I believe parents must exist in photos with their new babies and wouldnt have it ny other way! Angie absolutely loves capturing the emotion between parents and their new baby in those first days. There is nothing better than a mum snuggled up to her new baby kissing him/her and admiring every little detail of her baby. Capturing a dad with their new baby is something totally different, the look in their eyes when they look at their baby and how they hold them is just incredible to witness and should never be missed out on. We love to capture individual parents with baby along with family all together also.

WHAT TO EXPECT

You should expect to arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled time to allow for feedings.  The studio is kept at 28 degrees in order to keep the baby warm and comfortable. Newborns can lose their body temperature quickly, especially when unclothed, so we need to assure they are kept warm at all times. You may want to dress in layers so that you are comfortable as well.

Please know that babies pee and poo on everything and you don’t need to worry.  I have plenty of wipes and pads on hand and everything is washed after each session.  There will be a white noise machine running to help soothe the baby.  Feel free to sit back, relax, read a book, or even take this opportunity to take a nap yourself!

No outside cameras, videos, or cell phone cameras are allowed at the studio or any location session.

WHAT TO BRING

  • pacifier – The “soothie” pacifiers are highly recommended for your newborn baby.  These have been found to be the most effective in soothing and helping newborns to latch on easily.  Even if you aren’t thinking you will want to use a pacifer, I encourage you to bring one to your session.  The short amount of time we will be using one should not affect any habit-forming behaviors for your baby.  My goal is to help keep the baby happy and calm during our session.
  • extra bottles – Whether you are nursing or bottle feeding, having extra bottles and/or milk is suggested.  Some babies tend to eat more than usual during their photo sessions.  It’s best to be prepared! Feel free to bring food for yourself as well, although I will have snacks for you in the studio.
  • nursery items – Hand knitted hats, blankets, a special toy, rattle…. these are all things that help create the story of your baby’s first few days of life.  I love photographing separate items to be used in their newborn albums!
  • clothing – Generally I will be photographing your baby unclothed. Part of the experience in capturing a newborn is seeing the squishy little toes and cute tiny bums.  However, I do recommend bringing them in simple clothing, such as simple onesies.  I also have some adorable bonnets in the studio I love to use as well.

This is not to say we can’t photograph your newborn at any other age.  Beautiful images can be captured at any stage. However, you should know that once beyond this “new” stage, we may not be able to get the curly poses.  If you are sure you want specific poses, please ask about those during your pre-consultation.

LITTLE BOYS

If you are considering having your baby boy circumcised, we will need to make sure we allow him at least 5 days of healing time before his session.  It’s always best to schedule the procedure after the photo session if at all possible.

My goal as your Photographer, is not only to pose the baby in to the curly, squishy poses everyone loves, but to also capture natural imagery portraits of your newborn.  This is a time to reflect on the true, untouched, unposed expression of the baby as themselves.  Little things that help shape and mold them in to whom they will become as a person are special and unique to each baby.
